Project Overview
Jewellery retail in India operates under extreme statutory, financial, and operational constraints: volatile gold and silver spot prices, mandatory BIS 6-character HUID hallmarking, complex scrap deductions on old gold exchanges, karigar (artisan) metal wastage reconciliation down to milligrams, and strict cash restriction laws (Section 269ST). Most existing jewellery ERPs are legacy desktop tools with clunky UIs, vendor lock-in, or invasive cloud dependencies that risk sensitive customer books. I architected and built JewelOS to provide a modern, ultra-fast, offline-first operating system that gives store owners complete data sovereignty with zero compromise on speed or statutory rigor.
The Problem
Traditional jewellery POS and ERP solutions suffer from multiple systemic flaws: slow manual billing leading to customer queues, lack of automated compliance for Indian tax laws (e.g. GST Rule 46 splits and ₹2L cash transaction warnings under Section 269ST), error-prone artisan wastage calculations, and vulnerable cloud architectures that expose confidential client purchase histories and gold holdings to third-party servers.
Solution & Approach
I engineered JewelOS with a decoupled Storage Adapter architecture (Dexie IndexedDB for instant in-store web/PWA use, SQLite for offline standalone desktop deployment, and Cloud sync capability). It includes a 10x faster checkout terminal with camera/barcode scanning, dynamic metal purity math based on live ticker rates, an automated Gold Mortgage (Girvi) engine with 4 interest calculation formulas and a 75% LTV risk gauge, milligram-accurate karigar job card tracking, AES-256 encrypted KYC storage at rest, and direct WhatsApp PDF invoice dispatch.
Architecture & System Flow
Decoupled Storage Adapter Pattern: Abstract StorageAdapter contract supporting Dexie.js (IndexedDB for offline PWA), SQLite (Tauri/Electron desktop), and CloudAdapter (PostgreSQL/Supabase).
Dynamic Purity & Tax Engine: Real-time calculation of net metal weight, stone valuation, making charges (percentage, per-gram, or fixed), and automated CGST 1.5% + SGST 1.5% or IGST 3% splits.
Statutory Safeguard Pipeline: Automated blocking and warning triggers for cash transactions reaching or exceeding ₹2,00,000 (Section 269ST) and mandatory PAN advisories (Rule 114B).
Cryptographic Security at Rest: Client Aadhaar and PAN documents encrypted via AES-256 before disk write, protected by PBKDF2-derived master passphrase emergency recovery.
Direct WhatsApp Dispatcher: Template-driven client invoice delivery via WhatsApp Web API with zero third-party telemetry or cloud tracking.
Key Capabilities & Features
Operational Retrospective & Lessons
“Designing mission-critical software for high-value physical retail requires radical empathy for checkout operators. Sub-second response times, keyboard shortcuts, and fail-safe local persistence are vastly more valuable to a jeweller than complex cloud dashboards. Enforcing legal compliance directly within the UX prevents catastrophic audit penalties without slowing down sales.”
